HURRICANE KATRINA VOLUNTEERS IN MISSISSIPPI

Thought I would update everyone as to where my wife and I are and what we have been doing these past 4 months. We came to D'Iberville, MS as medical volunteers at the end of the 2nd week after Hurricane Katrina crashed ashore.

We have been here ever since. There was and continues to be so much devastation everywhere. It is beyond words or comprehension unless you are here - even then it is mindboggling. As far as much of the Country is concerned, these people are back to normal. After all the Hurricane was 4 months ago. But the people here are far from normal. Many are still living in tents - some with small children. Imagine being in a tent with children when the nightly temperatures are in the upper 30's or it is pouring down rain. Or, what about 2 adults and 4 children staying in a small FEMA trailer? Not real pleasant thoughts are they? But that is the daily living conditions of so many. There are people living in houses where the walls are coated with mold or a tree is resting on the front portion of the house. The stories go on and on. Many of these people lost everything - home, possessions, job, transportation, insurance, medications, and the list goes on. These people are so appreciative for the smallest act of kindness. Each time that I am thanked for being here I feel that I just received a raise in pay. My paycheck is now worth about a million dollars. You tell yourself that you are here to lift these people's spirits but you find that they are lifting yours just as high. There isn't a day that goes by that you don't see the hand of the Lord at work or feel His Spirit swirl around you. Blessings and miracles are happening almost before you finish your pray request. We are working at a free medical clinic - seeing between 85 and 112 patients daily. We are always in need of medical volunteers - doctors, PAs, nurses. All of the clinic medications, equipment, and supplies have been and continue to be donated. At the present time our clinic is housed under the overhang of an old grocery store with blue tarps as the walls, and a generator providing our power. But our patients think it is a castle. Many of the doctors' offices (and homes) were destroyed. Some are slowly making their back into practice. Some have left and some haven't been heard from since the storm. Please continue to say a prayer for those people and for all the volunteers who are trying to help them to rebuild. Submitted by Clive L. Squibb

POPCORN UPDATE

The Popcorn Wagon was certainly busy in August!

The new Shrine decals sure look good, and the air conditioners work great.

We had an inquiry from a potential applicant at the Hispanic Health
Fair, and at the Pawhuska parade a lady approached Noble Murl Ford and said, “Thanks to the Shriners, her child was able to run in the Special Olympics.” It’s always nice to hear statements like that!

The parades/events and amount of popcorn passed out in August are as follows:

Tulsa Night Out - McClure Park .......................600 Sacks
Hawthorne Elementary School ..........................480 Sacks
Hispanic Health Fair - Church ...........................680 sacks
Neighborhood Block Party ................................240 Sacks
Kingspointe Village Shopping Center ...............120 Sacks
Ponca City Parade ..............................................480 Sacks
Vinita Parade ......................................................680 Sacks
Iron Lightning Big Dog Car-Bike Show ...........200 Sacks
Waukomis Parade ..............................................650 Sacks
August Total ...................................................4,130 Sacks

Look for another update soon!

POPCORN WAGON NEWS!

August update on the Popcorn Wagon's travels!

July was a slow month - The East Tulsa Parade was canceled, and the Sperry Parade start time was wrong...

King's Pointe on July 15 was rained out...

However, the crew made the Pawhuska Parade and the Talon’s Family Night Tailgate Party. Between these two events we distributed 280 sacks of popcorn!

On August 4th, "Tulsa Night Out", we handed out 600 sacks, and were on TV!

On August 10th, at Hawthorne Elementary, we gave away 440 bags of our yummy popped corn!

We also took the Popcorn Wagon to the Hispanic Health Fair on Saturday, August 13th.

The new Popcorn Wagon decals (free from Tampa) have arrived and they should be on the wagon very soon. Look for pictures here as soon as we have them!

POPCORN UPDATE!

July news from The Popcorn Wagon!

July has been a busy month for the Popcorn Wagon! Here's a view of three of our great volunteers "in action"

Lady Pat Ladd, Noble Murl Ford, and Lady Carolyn Beisly

You can be "Front Page News" too! Help out the Popcorn Wagon, and your picture might just show up here!

Noble Ed Tinker invited us to Drumright to partake in the welcoming
of the Free Wheel Oklahoma (Bicycle) Tour. Ed said
Drumright was voted No. 1 Host City on the tour and our being
there was a contributing factor. Numerous participants in the tour
expressed their appreciations for our involvement and asked
about and complimented us on the work we do.
Noble Murl Ford drove the Popcorn Wagon and operated the
popcorn machine. Noble Don Quinn and his daughter passed out a total of 280
sacks of popcorn.

Back in Tulsa to the Kingspointe Village Shopping Center, we
were invited back for the second time for a neighborhood party.
Again, we were well-received by the guests and owners. There
was a large crowd and first-class entertainment. Noble Blaine Davis
drove the Popcorn Wagon and operated the popcorn machine. Ill.
Sir Pete Goltra assisted with the distribution of 360 sacks of popcorn.

The next stop during the month was the Ridgeway Baptist
Church near Sapulpa, where we were invited to their family picnic
event. They served hot dogs, snow-cones, had fireworks, and we
passed out 880 sacks of popcorn. One of the church members told
a volunteer that her son was a recent patient in a Shriners
Childrens Hospital. She expressed her thanks and deep appreciation.
Thanks to the following volunteers who worked this event: Ill.
Sir Pete Goltra, Noble Gary and Lady Carolyn Beisly, Lady Helen
Delk, Helen’s daughter, Karen and grand-daughter.

We send a special thanks to Noble Duane Rosser for furnishing
and installing two roof air-conditioning units on the Popcorn
Wagon. Traveling the highways and byways should now be a comfortable
and enjoyable experience.
